May Update

This Sunday is the Alex Smith Memorial Race, traditionally held in the Fulford area, so please come ready to spend the whole day away from the club.

The Level 1 course starts on Tuesday of next week with sessions on Friday and the following Tuesday/Friday before the final day on Saturday 25 May. Sessions start at 1900 evenings and 1000 on Saturday. The course is fully subscribed this year so if you can help out on any or all of the days and haven’t already done so please sign up in the clubhouse.

As you will have seen from Phil’s email earlier in the week YOSC are celebrating their 75th anniversary this year with a pursuit race on the evening of the 1 June. If you wish to sail or attend the evening barbeque (or both) please let Phil Green know as soon as possible.

The following Saturday is our ‘City Center’ Races with sailing in the Rowntree’s Park area. Numbers are limited for this as everyone will need towing to the sailing area. Please let me know if you wish to be involved. If you don’t wish to sail we will be promoting the club on the riverbank so assistance here is welcome.

Finally as the Ullswater weekend is just around the corner, being slightly earlier than normal on the 22/23rd June, a list will shortly be appearing on the club notice board. Whilst there is no pre booking required we do try and let the site know how many are coming so please do sign up if you are planning to come along.

Open Day

Would you like to try sailing? York RI Sailing Club is having an open day this Sunday, April 28th 2013 at 11am until 4pm.

Bring a change of clothes and some soft soled shoes if you’d like to sail.

Members: please don’t forget the YRISC Open Day on Sunday. That’s this Sunday, 28 April, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. We need as many members as possible to turn up and act as happy smiling faces to greet visitors! Please come along if you possibly can. See you there!

February Update

A few items to bring to your attention:

Please do not overlook the AGM which is taking place this Friday, 8 February at 7.30pm at the RI Building in Queens Street. WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT.

We shall have a BONFIRE at the Club on Saturday 16 February from 10.00am to get rid of as much of the remains of the former rear hut as possible. Gardening gloves and wrecking bars would be useful. Please come and lend a hand if you can.

Is the QUIZ NIGHT safely booked in your diary? Do not forget: Thursday 21 February at 7.30pm at The Tap and Spile in Monkgate. It will be an evening not to be missed. Food is provided at £5 per head. Please let Steve Hogg have numbers (click ) as soon as you can.

CLEANING DAY is set for Sunday 3 March from 10.30am. Please come down to the Club and help to get the place ready for the start of the sailing season. Many hands will make light work, yard brooms and shovels would be welcomed.

The new Sailing Programme will be published next week. Come to the AGM to see an advance copy!

Working Party – Sunday -13 Jan

We need as many members as possible to help out with some essential maintenance on Sunday 13 January, starting at 10.30. We expect to need several hours of work, so please stay if you can and bring a bite to eat.

Please bring tools that can help in tackling one or more of the following tasks:

Taking out and rebuilding the floor in the gents toilet
Fixing chicken wire on the rear verandah
Replacing unsafe boards on the front verandah
Rebuilding the timber decking on the upstream jetty
Digging soil and turf away from the field gate to allow the gate to open fully
Mud clearance on one slipway to allow a boat to be launched to assist in the jetty repairs
Muscle power to recover the Club GP14 from its post-flood perch (do not ask me to explain, but we need all hands on this one!)

November Bulletin

Saturday winter sailing series – every Saturday from now until Christmas / we’re flooded again / the river freezes over. With no leaves on the trees the breezes are steadier, and with fewer motorboats weaving their up and down the river we have a clear expanse of water to sail on … So come and join in! If you fancy a sail, come to the club by 12:00 noon any Saturday.

YRISC annual dinner – Friday 30 November, 7:30 for 8:00 pm, Lady Anne Middleton’s Hotel. If you’ve booked your place, please send your money (£22 a head) to Paul McLean as soon as you can. And if you haven’t booked a place, you might still be in time – send a message straight away.

End-of-season meeting – Tuesday 18 December, 7:30 pm, at Steve and Liz Parry’s house. Mulled wine, various bits of tasty food to nibble, the usual stuff. If you have any old photographs of activities at YRISC, bring them along. All welcome.

You must be joking! Just in case anyone hasn’t noticed the water level, and is still thinking of coming to the club tomorrow to help with jetty repair – don’t bother!

Sailing on Sunday also looks out of the question. Keep an eye on the Environment Agency website (the “Viking Recorder” in York city centre is here), but unless it drops to something like 2.5 metres, forget it…

September Bulletin

YRISC members and friends -

So the regatta has come and gone, and some of us survived intact. The weather was beautiful, the breeze was remarkably steady, the start line was crowded, and, as is traditional when YOSC host the event, one of their boats won it. But congratulations to James, Neville and Peter H for podium finishes. What’s next?

Plenty of sailing still to be done. The Wednesday evening series is finished (it’s too dark!), but we’re still sailing every Sunday until the end of October. We’re surely due an Indian summer … perfect weather for sailing … Come along every Sunday and join in!

Saturday 29 September - working party to repair a jetty, cut some grass, tidy up this and that around the grounds. Starting at 10.00 a.m. Please come and help if you can – and perhaps fill in the form below to let us know you intend to be there.

Annual Dinner - not quite yet, but soon. Some fine evening in November. To be arranged. Details to follow in due course.

Regatta next Weekend!

Next Sunday (2 September) is the first Sunday in September, and that can only mean one thing: the YRISC/YOSC joint ANNUAL REGATTA! This year it’s the turn of our friends at Yorkshire Ouse SC to host the event, so we want to ensure a good turnout from York RI SC. Please come along if you can – for a good day’s sailing plus some of YOSC’s legendary lunch and famous cake. We’ll need to set out from the club at about 10.30, so come early – and please fill in the form below if you plan to come, so the information can be passed on to YOSC and they know how many cakes to bake.

Try Sailing for Free! 22nd July

On the 22nd of July York RI Sailing Club are holding a special “Try Sailing for Free!” event.

It’s like a less formal version of the Open Day… but like the Open Day, just turn up between 11am and 4pm. If you want us to, we’ll get you out on the water sailing… but you’ll also be welcome to come down just to take a look if you prefer.

If you want to sail please do bring a change of clothes and some soft soled shoes (we don’t think you’ll need the change of clothes – but just in case).

We’ll provide a boat, a buoyancy aid and an experienced sailor to help you.
