YRISC eNews June 2017

Events to look forward to, and take part in …

ULLSWATER, 23–25 June. We hope you’ll all be able to join our annual trip (sailing and camping) to Ullswater. Details were in the recent YRISC News (https://yrisc.files.wordpress.com/2017/05/june-2017.pdf), but if you want more information, just ask. If you are planning to come, it would be helpful if you could let us know. Send message to yrisc@hotmail.com. Please also tell us if you are planning to bring a boat, or if you have a towbar and could volunteer to bring one of the club boats.

Rescue boat training, Friday 30 June. From 19:00, max 8 people. Names to yrisc@hotmail.com, or add your name to the list in the club house.

Mike is running an RYA Small Craft First Aid Course on Saturday 1 July. In the club house, start 09:00, finish around 16:30. Tea and coffee provided, but please bring a packed lunch. Includes CPR, defibrillation training, cold water shock, bleeding and hydrostatic dressings. Cost to non-members £60, discounted price for YRISC members £35, including certificate and book. All students must be 16 or over. Minimum of 6 people required for the course to run, max 12. Names to yrisc@hotmail.com. Deposit of £10 by 20 June, please. Final payment before 28 June.

Other stuff …

Use of club boats. We have SIX club boats – two Toppers, two Visions, a GP14 and an RS200. They are available for club members to use, once you have demonstrated to the committee that you are competent to do so. There is a modest fee for their use other than in formal training sessions, and for this year it is £3 for a full day, £2 for a half-day or evening. The money is used to cover the cost of repairs and maintenance – because bits of equipment do wear out, and do occasionally get broken. When you use one of these boats, please make sure to (a) pay the fee and (b) record which boat you have used, and any issues encountered, in the diary on the club-house table. On formal sailing days, the Race Officer will chase you for this!

YRISC News. The latest issue was sent out a week or so ago. Did you get your copy? If not, apologies for the slip-up, and please let us know (yrisc@hotmail.com). Meanwhile, you can see it on our website at https://yrisc.files.wordpress.com/2017/05/june-2017.pdf.

Facebook. Do you use Facebook? We do, and our page (https://www.facebook.com/York-RI-Sailing-Club-199891886697380) serves us well as an advertisement for the club.

Twitter. @yorksailing. That is all you need to know.

YRISC eNews April 2017

Various forthcoming events, in non-chronological order

Level 1 course: help needed

  • Tuesday 16 and Friday 19 May (7 pm onwards)
  • Saturday 20 May (all day, starting 10 am)
  • Tuesday 23 and Friday 26 May (7 pm onwards)

If you can help on any of these dates, please do! There is (or soon will be) a notice in the club house. Please add your name to the list – and read and sign the document attached to the notice (new RYA requirement).

Do you know anyone who might like to learn to sail? If so, please mention the course to them, and encourage them to sign up! The cost for the five sessions is a very reasonable £100, plus membership fee.

Mike is running an RYA Small Craft First Aid Course on Saturday 29 April. He already has some people from other clubs signed up, but could do with some YRSC members as well – and of course it’s important that as many members as possible are trained. Special discounted price for YRISC members is £35, including certificate and book. Please contact Mike if you would like to take part: yrisc@hotmail.com.

Saturday 22 April: GP14 Classic/Vintage Open Meeting. If you can possibly make it, please do! We need a good turnout of our own boats, to give the visitors some competition for the Round Holes Trophy. If you don’t have your own boat, there is always the club boat, or a loan of a boat might be possible. Or volunteer to crew for someone! And even if you cannot sail, come along and join the fun. And whether sailing or not, please BRING CAKE. Details on our website: https://yrisc.org/2017/02/07/gp14-classicvintage-open-meeting-22-april-2017. Please let Steve Parry that you are intending to take part: yrisc@hotmail.com.

MORE CAKE will be required the following week, on Sunday 30 April, when Steve is running another day of fun on the water. Silly races, floating dustbins, sweets, maybe some belated Easter eggs… Following the successful pattern of the first such event last September. Please bring the family!

Sunday 14 May – our annual Open Day. A bit later than in previous years, and timed to coincide with the RYA’s “Push the Boat Out” initiative (see http://www.rya.org.uk/programmes/push-the-boat-out). In due course we’ll be looking for volunteers to act as friendly faces on the day. Further details at the start of May.

Oh, and finally … If you haven’t already done so, don’t forget to PAY YOUR SUBSCRIPTION for 2017! Here you go: https://yrisc.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/yrisc-membership-form-2017.pdf
