YRISC eNews April 2017

Various forthcoming events, in non-chronological order

Level 1 course: help needed

  • Tuesday 16 and Friday 19 May (7 pm onwards)
  • Saturday 20 May (all day, starting 10 am)
  • Tuesday 23 and Friday 26 May (7 pm onwards)

If you can help on any of these dates, please do! There is (or soon will be) a notice in the club house. Please add your name to the list – and read and sign the document attached to the notice (new RYA requirement).

Do you know anyone who might like to learn to sail? If so, please mention the course to them, and encourage them to sign up! The cost for the five sessions is a very reasonable £100, plus membership fee.

Mike is running an RYA Small Craft First Aid Course on Saturday 29 April. He already has some people from other clubs signed up, but could do with some YRSC members as well – and of course it’s important that as many members as possible are trained. Special discounted price for YRISC members is £35, including certificate and book. Please contact Mike if you would like to take part: yrisc@hotmail.com.

Saturday 22 April: GP14 Classic/Vintage Open Meeting. If you can possibly make it, please do! We need a good turnout of our own boats, to give the visitors some competition for the Round Holes Trophy. If you don’t have your own boat, there is always the club boat, or a loan of a boat might be possible. Or volunteer to crew for someone! And even if you cannot sail, come along and join the fun. And whether sailing or not, please BRING CAKE. Details on our website: https://yrisc.org/2017/02/07/gp14-classicvintage-open-meeting-22-april-2017. Please let Steve Parry that you are intending to take part: yrisc@hotmail.com.

MORE CAKE will be required the following week, on Sunday 30 April, when Steve is running another day of fun on the water. Silly races, floating dustbins, sweets, maybe some belated Easter eggs… Following the successful pattern of the first such event last September. Please bring the family!

Sunday 14 May – our annual Open Day. A bit later than in previous years, and timed to coincide with the RYA’s “Push the Boat Out” initiative (see http://www.rya.org.uk/programmes/push-the-boat-out). In due course we’ll be looking for volunteers to act as friendly faces on the day. Further details at the start of May.

Oh, and finally … If you haven’t already done so, don’t forget to PAY YOUR SUBSCRIPTION for 2017! Here you go: https://yrisc.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/yrisc-membership-form-2017.pdf

YRISC eNews, January 2017

Such a lot to tell you about this month … But first of all – Happy New Year!

And second of all – next week, on THURSDAY 12 JANUARY, we are holding a MIDWINTER SOCIAL EVENING. All club members and friends welcome. It’s a bit like the old end-of-season meeting, but less formal (and in January, not December). We’ll probably pass around the draft sailing programme, and find a volunteer to act as quizmaster at the Annual Quiz (see below), but otherwise it’s just a social evening. Details were emailed to members on 4 January.

And then … Our AGM will be held on Friday 10 February (7.30 pm, in the Railway Institute on Queen Street). A formal notice will be sent out later this month. Please attend if you possibly can. It won’t take long, but there is some important business to get through, including electing the committee and approving the membership subscriptions rates for 2017. And remember, we are still looking for a TREASURER and a COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER. Duties not onerous, but efforts greatly appreciated. Any volunteers?

Thursday 23 February – the Great Annual YRISC Quiz. Marcia Inn, Bishopthorpe. Time to be arranged, but probably 7.30 pm. Meanwhile, does anyone fancy having a go at setting the questions?

Sunday 14 May – our annual Open Day. A bit later than in previous years, and timed to coincide with the RYA’s “Push the Boat Out” initiative (see http://www.rya.org.uk/programmes/push-the-boat-out). In due course we’ll be looking for volunteers to act as friendly faces on the day.

Level 1 course – dates this year are the evenings of Tuesday 16, Friday 19, Tuesday 23 and Friday 26 May, plus an all-day session on Saturday 20 May. Volunteers will be sought, and if you know anyone who might like to learn to sail, encourage them to sign up! Details are (or soon will be) on our website at https://yrisc.org/training/.

Other TRAINING COURSES for club members. Here are some we could organise:

  • Powerboat training – probably a Wednesday evening in late April. If you’re on duty as a race officer you really need to know this stuff.
  • How to run a race on the river – most likely an evening in early spring, either in the clubhouse or in someone’s house. We need to increase our pool of people who can run a race, and this will give you all the essential information. Nothing scary, nothing too technical, just the practicalities.
  • Introduction to racing – a practical session on the river, either on a weekday evening or perhaps on a Sunday afternoon. Lots of starting practice, plus a bit about rules and tactics.
  • First aid course – Mike Craggs would be happy to run a specially tailored course for club members. It would be an all-day course on a Saturday, and there would be a small charge to cover things like the handbook.

Might you be interested in any of the above? Apart from the first aid, they would all be free to YRISC members. Please let us know: yrisc@hotmail.com.

And finally …

  • Coming soon – a membership survey
  • Also coming soon – a new issue of YRISC News. But only if Angela has some material to put in it. Send contributions now: yrisc@hotmail.com.

YRISC e-News, October 2016

What’s happening over the next couple of months?

The sailing season hasn’t got many weeks left in it (though please do come and join in the Icicle Series, starting on Sunday 23 October) – but that doesn’t mean that YRISC shuts up shop for the winter. Here are just some of the events to look forward to.

Annual Dinner, Friday 2 December, Marcia Inn, Bishopthorpe. Cost (as usual) will be in the region of £20 a head. Details to follow. Put the date in your diary now.

End-of-Season Meeting. We’re going to do it differently this winter. Instead of a meeting in December, we will hold a social evening and discussion some time in late January. More of a Start-of-Season Meeting, perhaps. Watch this space for further details.

Quiz. Don’t forget the ever-popular YRISC quiz! Probably late February. Would anyone like to volunteer to act as quiz-master?

Finally, does anyone want to buy a Topper? We have decided to sell two of the Club’s Toppers. We have checked the price of second-hand Toppers on the open market, but before we advertise them more widely we are offering them to members for rather less. So we are asking for £375 for one of them, and £275 for the other. Both come with spars and sails. There is a trolley under each of them but both trolleys need some work. If you are interested, speak to Peter Craggs or send a message to the usual email address (yrisc@hotmail.com).
